Nebraska lawmakers advance bill to allow small business breweries, distilleries to self-distribute products
LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) – Lawmakers in Nebraska debated and advanced a bill to help small businesses on Tuesday.
LB 113 would expand the reach of craft brewers and distillers to share the product with more people and places without having to use a middleman — the distributor.
The idea is to allow the small businesses to open more taprooms and sell more gallons of beer or spirits directly to the grocery stores, liquor stores, or bars without the aded cost of having someone do it for them.
“The impact, especially for smaller brewers and distillers, is that they are able to take out the expense of using a distributor if they can self-distribute a quantity that makes sense,” said Josh Christensen, who’s on the Nebraska Craft Brewery Board. “The taproom locations, if it makes sense in their business model to open more locations, they’re not restricted to as low of a number.”
Some lawmakers questioned the changes, considering this bill is updating a law from a couple years ago. Others explained that bill was too cautious and didn’t move the needle enough for small businesses.
Lawmakers advanced LB 113 to the second round in a vote Tuesday.
